How to add interest to a simple outfit
I noticed a few different variations of this question in the Facebook group this week:
"How do I make a simple outfit feel styled without adding lots of accessories or an outer layer?
Maybe you’re just at home and don’t need a bag or scarf. Or maybe, like some of you mentioned, work restrictions mean you have to wear a fairly simple outfit, and you’re wondering how to keep things looking intentional without those ‘finishing touches.’
One reason a ‘plain’ outfit can sometimes feel unfinished is because we’re so used to seeing layered outfits on Instagram and Pinterest.
Layering is one of the easiest ways to add visual interest to an outfit—and it’s a tool you see being used all the time on Insta.
Sometimes it’s subtle—just a coat thrown over an outfit, a bag, a scarf. We’ve all seen those ‘how to style’ reels where someone takes a top and jeans, throws on a coat, and suddenly—it’s styled. But… have they actually styled it, or have they just put on an extra layer they need to wear anyway? (Also, don’t get me started on ‘warm’ outfits that wouldn’t actually keep anyone warm!)
Other times, layering is built into the outfit itself—like all the vests and knotted scarves that are trending right now, which are a super fun and easy way to add interest and colour to an outfit.
And sometimes, layering is completely fake—like the artfully draped jumpers we keep seeing everywhere (I have my opinion on these… and how you would actually look at someone if you saw someone using a jumper as a scarf as they walked down the road!)
They’re all little ‘tricks’ to make outfits look visually interesting.
So, if we’re not layering up or using accessories, how do we still make an outfit feel polished and intentional?
First, remember—your outfit doesn’t have to be all-singing, all-dancing every day. It’s absolutely fine to dress for the day you’re having and keep things simple if that’s what feels right.
One of the reasons it feels like that’s not okay is because we’re so used to seeing ‘influencer’ outfits—carefully crafted for Instagram, designed to stand out and rack up likes. But real life isn’t an instagram post.
That said, here are a few easy ways to add interest and intention to even the simplest outfits.
The trick is in texture, structure, and subtle layering.
1️⃣ Texture: Add depth without adding bulk
Think about the texture of the item you are wearing - a ribbed knit vs. a smooth jumper makes a difference. Mixing even small variations in texture (like denim with a soft knit or a crisp cotton shirt) keeps an outfit from feeling too flat.
🚫 Common Mistake: Wearing too many similar textures—like all smooth cotton—can make an outfit feel flat.
2️⃣ Colour: Use contrast & repetition to pull things together
Even if you're wearing a simple outfit, using a pop of colour (or even a subtle colour sandwich with shoes and a top) can help create a more intentional look.
🚫 Common Mistake: Wearing all one shade (especially in muted tones) without contrast can sometimes make an outfit feel unfinished.
3️⃣ Structure: The way you wear things matters
A neatly cuffed sleeve, a half-tuck, or rolling your jeans just once at the hem can make a ‘plain’ outfit feel instantly more styled.
💡 Try This: Next time you wear a jumper and jeans, add a front tuck or push up your sleeves slightly for a more intentional look.
4️⃣ Subtle Layers: The details that make a difference
Even indoors, a peeking white T-shirt under a jumper makes a difference. You’ll often notice stylists doing this—it adds just a touch of contrast at the neckline or hem.
🚫 Common Mistake: Avoid using a tee that’s too thin/flimsy—it won’t sit right under a jumper and might look untidy. You can also turn the tee around to make it sit better.
5️⃣ Jewellery: Minimal but impactful
If you prefer minimal jewellery, simple studs or a fine necklace can still add polish. But if you love earrings (as you mentioned!), lean into them as your signature—bold or colourful earrings can do as much work as a bag or scarf in bringing an outfit together.
💡 Try This: If you always wear simple studs, experiment with a statement earring in your season’s colours.
6️⃣ Belts: Small detail, big difference
Adding a simple belt in the right place can define your silhouette and make a ‘plain’ outfit look considered without adding extra layers.
💡 Try This: Try a belt with high-waisted trousers or over a dress to see how it changes the proportions
The key takeaway:
A simple outfit isn’t unfinished. It’s about making small, intentional choices that make you feel put together—even without extra layers or accessories.
