The 3 colour rule

Mastering the 3-Colour Rule: Effortlessly Create Balanced Outfits

Let’s talk about one of the simplest yet most effective style tips out there—the 3-Colour Rule. This guideline is a total game-changer when it comes to pulling together outfits that feel balanced, cohesive, and totally you. By sticking to three colors, you can avoid that overwhelming feeling of “too much going on,” and instead, create a look that feels polished and intentional. Plus, it makes getting dressed a whole lot easier—no need to overthink every single detail.

How to Nail the 3-Colour Rule

Start with Your Dominant Colour: Begin by choosing the main colour that will anchor your outfit. This is usually the color that takes up the most real estate, like your dress, coat, or trousers. This dominant color is your starting point and sets the tone for the rest of your look.

Add a Secondary Colour: Next, bring in a complementary or neutral colour that works well with your dominant hue. This could be in your top, shoes, or maybe a scarf. The secondary color adds depth without taking away from your main color—it’s all about balance.

Finish with an Accent Colour: Finally, it’s time to have some fun. Choose a third colour to act as an accent—this is where you can add a pop of something bold or a statement piece like a handbag or standout shoes. The accent color is your secret weapon for injecting a bit of personality and flair into your outfit.

By following these steps, you’ll create a layered, sophisticated look that’s full of colour and fun, but never overwhelming.

Top Tips:

  • Black and White Are Your Best Friends: Black and white are considered neutrals in this rule, so feel free to mix them in with your three chosen colours.

  • Neutral-Only Looks: Don’t shy away from creating a chic, neutral-only outfit. Black, white, gray, and brown all work beautifully together, and throwing in a leopard print (which is totally a neutral, by the way) can add some extra flair.

  • Accent with Purpose: Use your accent colour intentionally—think accessories, a statement piece, or even a bold lip color. A little goes a long way.

  • Texture and Patterns: Don’t hesitate to play with different textures or patterns within the same color family to add interest to your outfit while still sticking to the 3-Colour Rule.

Enhance Your Style with Colour Seasons

Here’s a little pro tip: To really make the 3-Colour Rule work for you, think about your colour season. Whether you’re a Spring, Summer, Autumn, or Winter, knowing your colour season helps you choose shades that naturally harmonize with your personal colouring. It’s like a cheat code for creating outfits that not only look great but feel perfectly ‘you.’

Understanding your colour season is a game-changer in building a wardrobe that’s both cohesive and flattering. If you’re curious about finding your colour season, keep an eye out for upcoming posts where I’ll dive deeper into this topic.

Want to see the 3-Colour Rule in action? Have a peek below at four outfits styled for each season.

Spring

This casual outfit, uses cream as its base, with turquoise and red as the pops of colour. The white of the t-shirt can be ignored because it’s a neutral and allows the red on the tee to stand out.

Summer

This denim dress was on everyone last season, and different versions are now popping up in all the shops this season. This is the original version from Aligne in the denim, and it makes just a perfect piece for Autumn. Layer it with a thermal or a top as the weather drops as well.

The denim works as the main colour in the three colours for this outfit, the lavender shoes are the main second colour also picked up in the belt and the necklace. The pale pink of the bag finishes off the three colours.

Autumn

As the weather starts to change I start to look at different materials and textures in my clothes, and leather starts to make an appearance everywhere in the shop. This brown faux leather skirt, is perfect for dressing up, but will also look great worn casually with a pair of boots and a jumper. The wrap style means it’s really easy to wear, and works if you sometimes struggle with a small waist hip ratio.

The two colours I have teamed the chocolate brown with are rust and stone, with some gold as an additional tone to round off the outfit.

Winter

As soon as I saw this dress I loved it and knew it would be a super versatile addition to any wardrobe. At first look it seems that it would look amazing worn casually with trainers, but here I have chosen to dress it up with pretty pumps and feminine accessories.

The navy here is the main colour, with the emerald green and the pale purple (which is also found as a subtle stripe in the dress) is used to accessorise the outfit.
