Bag charms (and other things to add to your bag!)

I dragged my husband around the shops this week, and we kept seeing the same trend everywhere—one I had spotted in magazines last year but hadn’t seen trickle down to the high street yet. And that trend? Bag charms.

Celebs and the fashion set are using them to personalise their expensive designer handbags, but what really caught my eye was how fun and accessible this trend could be. A little pop of colour, a playful detail, something that turns a plain bag into a statement piece—it’s an easy way to inject personality into your everyday outfits. Not to mention it sings JOY!

And honestly? Some of these high-end charms look suspiciously like something I could DIY with my twins’ bead sets. A few chunky beads, some ribbon, maybe even a quirky keyring—suddenly, we’re in business. It’s got me thinking about all the ways you could style bag charms to suit your colour season or match your outfit.

The looks I’ve been seeing are very maximalist—chains and keyrings layered on top of each other, clashing textures, and oversized charms. But honestly? I think you could get the same effect with just one simple chain. A single charm, a delicate link chain, or even a playful tassel could still add that same personalised touch without going full-on everything but the kitchen sink.

And if you already have some simple chain necklaces or letter bead bracelets lying around? Why not repurpose them? Try linking them onto a bag strap or mixing them with a charm to create something unique. It’s such an easy way to play around with the trend and using what you already have around the house!

I’ve seen a few in the shops that caught my eye—here are some favourites!
